Connecting the Past and Present Through LURIK

Among all the rich forms of textiles that Indonesia possesses, there are a lot of unique traditional textiles that are not recognized by a lot of Indonesia’s younger generation and one of them is Lurik. Lurik is a woven fabric originating from the region of Central Java with the basic motif of lines or boxes that are generally interspersed with various colours of yarn.

is a social campaign that aims to preserve Lurik as one of the country’s cultural gem. Specifically targeting the country’s younger generation, Tuluh Watu endeavors to raise the generation’s awareness of the existence of Lurik.

Derived from the name of a Lurik motif, Tuluh Watu comes from the Javanese language which roughly translates to “sturdy rock”. A rock such as this can endure years of change, be it in the past, present, and future. Hence, Lurik is a metaphor of Tuluh Watu being able to evolve and adapt to the environment around it.

VISION

Tuluh Watu strives to ensure a brighter future of Lurik as one of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, especially among the nation’s younger generation. We aspire to introduce Lurik to Indonesia’s young generation as one of the country’s cultural gem. We also seek to grow the generation’s appreciation towards this form of textile and its values. Our vision is also to make millennials feel a greater sense of pride of being Indonesian.

MISSION

Our mission is to broaden the younger generation’s knowledge about Lurik as well as Indonesia’s cultural heritage in general. Through Tuluh Watu, we aim to make Lurik more appealing in the eyes of the young generation, by combining elements from the past and present.

VALUES

We will show the world that Indonesia has an abundance of intangible cultural heritage, and Lurik is one of them.

We strive to uphold the traditional wisdom of simplicity in today’s modern and complex minds.

We want to incorporate the old and new, to create pieces that withstand the test of time.

We embrace the values embedded behind Lurik, that can be interwoven by those who appreciate it.

We want nothing more than to create a sense of admiration for Lurik among Indonesians old and young.

We care deeply about the amount of time spent on the weaving instrument, the blood and sweat involved during the process, as well as the stories behind every sheet of Lurik.

We stand for the men and women behind every piece of textile who have dedicated their lives towards perfecting this form of art.

We hope to one day continue their legacy by letting their tired hands rest after years of crafting masterpieces. We will be responsible for ensuring that the current generation and the generations after them will still have the chance to experience the true beauty of Lurik.
