Lurik, the Motherland's Gift

Textiles have always been prominent within the Indonesia’s culture, heritage, and history. This can be seen from its usage as garments, as well as a ceremonial and ritual artifact. Despite the diversity of the archipelago’s textiles, many of them are not recognized by the country’s younger generation. One of such textiles is Lurik, a woven fabric from the Javanese heartland.

The young generation’s lack of knowledge about the country’s cultural heritage has become Tuluh Watu’s main concern. Although there has been several efforts made by local designers in popularizing Lurik, the exposure was not large enough to capture the majority of young generation, especially those who were not interested in fashion. With Tuluh Watu, we strive to bring back Lurik’s golden days to today’s modern minds.

Stand Out

From

the Crowd

Nowadays, pop culture may appear more sophisticated to the younger generation; there is nothing wrong with following the worldwide trends. Nevertheless, the youth of Indonesia should always try to trace their roots. However complex the future gets, there is always something the youth can refer to in the past. Lurik is a textile that bridges both timeframes. Lurik’s timeless motif makes it versatile in the fashion world, and its simple design is exactly why it is so unorthodox in nature; going against the complexity of the modern era.

Treasure the Motherland's Gift

Indonesia is a country that is culturally rich; if we are not aware about our own customs, they could be lost without anyone realizing. One of the ways to prevent that from happening is by preserving it. In Yogyakarta, the mecca of Central Javanese arts, there are only a handful of craftsman that still preserve the process of making Lurik. This textile is one of Indonesia’s richest forms of culture and is an integral part of the country’s heritage. However, without appreciation and recognition, Lurik can be forgotten even more. It could become something of the past, and that will truly be a loss for this country.
