Tuluh Watu is a concept that is derived from a Lurik motif. It comes from the Javanese language, roughly translating it to “sturdy rock”. Lurik is metaphor for a rock that can endure years of change. A sturdy rock will always exist, be it in the past, present, and future. It is able to this because of its ever-evolving nature and adaptation with the environments around it.

Going back to Lurik, although it is still evident in the heartland of Java, its usage is minimal. In the past, the textile has been worn as day-to-day wear, for ceremonial rites, and even for religious proceedings. Through evolution and adaptation, Lurik can last.

The idea behind “Tuluh Watu” is to connect the past and the present, to ensure a better future for this form of heritage. We want to create a platform where the youth can incorporate the old and new; to create pieces that can withstand the test of time.
